Hi In Pic 5, i see the same gray scum when i BIAB, what is it i wonder?
I agree, it looks terrible. I had better take this batch off you for health and safety reasons.
I'll do a thorough sampling of 30-40 bottles and let you know if there was something wrong, I won't even charge you!

Took a reading tonight seeing as the airlock has stopped bubbling.

I left the sample in the trial jar for a while and it appeared to be creating some bubbles, so maybe the yeast hasn't finished yet.

Had a sneaky sample and it tastes good, lovely aroma coming through from the hops.

Anybody know what that stuff is that's floating in the trial jar?

looks fine, probably just bits of yeast/hop/break
if it was clumpy, fluffy, slimey i'd be worried but this stuff will either drop out or stay floating.
Either way it mostly wont make it into the bottle or keg

What scum are you talking about, can you go into more detail?
It's probably what's known as Teig in German and Fines in English. It's the finer flour particles from the milling. Sometimes if the milling is too fine you can get a layer on top of the grain bed which can blind the bed and cause run off issues. Commercial Lautering Tuns have knives which cut through this this grey layer to assist the run off.
There's no such thing as bad beer - some just taste better than others

cochised

All done with my first AG  :)

Started at 06:30 this morning and finished about 12, so about what I was expecting.

Did the blonde ale mash kit from THBC and ended up with 22 litres.
OG is meant to be 1050, got 1046/7 so happy with that.
Just let the cooled wort fly from the tap of my pot into the fermenter so loads of air in it.

All went well in the end, just a long shift really
