Double Brewday

Just wanted to share a few photos of my double brewday from Friday 24th March 2017.

On tuesday I made a 2ltr Yeast starter from Yeast Bay Vermont Ale 4000 and 200G Extra Light DME with the aim of stepping it up to brew 2 batches.
On thursday I decanted off the liquid that was on top of the yeast and then split the yeast into 2 and added it to 2 new 1.5ltr mixes of cooled boiled water & 150g Extra Light DME. Needless to say they both took off like rockets.  This yeast can crap out pretty early so I wanted to give it the best chance to avoid this.

2nd last image is of how the yeast flocced before decanting off into seperate starters.

Setting the mash water to be ready for mw to mash in as soon as I got home from work on Friday at 2.15pm.

This was my first time trying out a First Wort Hop addition rather than a 60 minute boil addition and also my first time adding hops directly to the wort instead of using a hop bag or spider.

These photos show that a filter of hop matter and flour from grain crush formed a filter on top of the actual filter.

Using my Tilt on one of Fridays brews too. Great gadget that I highly recommend.

All in all it was a succesfull double brewday.

POB and a certain Cider lovin fella popped up during the first brew, lending me a 02 cannister to oxygenate my wort prior to adding the yeast starter.
Another Garden County Brewer, JDC, popped up during the 2nd brew to co brew an NEIPA with me.

A good day of brewing with fellow brewers, sharing information and learning at the same time, what this forum and local clubs are all about.

How was drain off after the boil with that many hops on the filter?

I used the hop spider for that addition, sorry I should have made that clear.  Baby steps is how I'm taking it with regards to hop additions directly to the wort. 20g FWH was step 1, the 200g Steep addition as per that photo might clog the pump ... I will up my hop additions directly to the wort to see how this hop filter formed on the filter V blocked pump debate pans out. There's a lot of talk about it on the Facebook Grainfather Users Group.
